Do you want to make an impact in the field of Space?

Do you have the ambition to make a difference in the world from outer space? Do you have experience with embedded space flight software? Then you are the candidate we are looking for!

What Are You Going To Do As Software Engineer

You will join the Software Engineering team within the Engineering Group (EG), collaborating closely with mechanical, electronics, firmware engineers, and scientists in multidisciplinary project teams. Your work focuses on developing and maintaining software for prototypes, laboratory test setups, and SRON’s broader software testing framework.

You will also participate in the ESA TANGO mission, contributing to the development of an optical test‑bench setup for the TANGO‑CARBON camera, which will measure methane and CO₂ emissions from space.

  • Develop software for testing, calibration, and verification of scientific instruments and prototypes.
  • Maintain and improve SRON’s software test suite used across multiple space‑instrument projects.
  • Work on the optical test bench for the ESA TANGO mission, supporting detector and readout‑electronics development.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware, firmware, and scientific teams in a highly technical R&D environment.

Are you someone with:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5–8 years of experience in software development for hardware‑oriented systems.
  • Strong proficiency with Python (C++ is highly desirable).
  • Excellent experience with Linux‑based software development.
  • Strong understanding of hardware‑related software development, including control and communication with instruments.
  • Network and communication protocols
  • Familiarity with measurement equipment
  • Knowledge of digital signal processing (DSP)
  • Experience with embedded flight software and standards such as ECSS
  • Experience with MISRA guidelines for C++

Our customer

SRON (Space Research Organisation Netherlands) is the national institute for space research, dedicated to bringing science into space. They focus on major research questions such as imaging faint exoplanets, improving detector technology to capture even the smallest particles of light, understanding how aerosols influence the climate, studying the formation of stars and planets, and exploring the physics of black holes. Their work also plays a key role in understanding Earth: SRON develops satellite instruments that monitor greenhouse gases such as methane and provide global atmospheric insights that help address climate change. They develop advanced instrumentation for satellites like Sentinel‑5P and its successor missions, enabling daily scans of the Earth’s atmosphere.
